Dinner last night at Le Fournil was delicious, per the usual. We arrived early to beat the backup that occurs in the kitchen, which can sometimes lead to stays of three hours or more for a three-course meal, which can grow a bit aggravating. We were the second to be seated on the outdoor terrace surrounding a 12th-century fountain and were in and out in about 2 hours. I ordered a figs stuffed with foie gras for my appetizer, which also included a healthy sized slice of foie gras with a tart fig jam, which ended up pairing much better than the figs and foie gras cream, both of which I found to be not at their best. The figs were a bit mushy and past their prime and the foie gras cream wasn't nearly flavorful enough. For the main course, I went with a duck dish that included roasted duck breast that was then grilled and bits of thigh that were chopped up and seasoned in such a way that it reminded me of stuffing. It was excellent. My dessert was a delectably thick & rich pot de creme.
Conversation drifted to the dark side by the main course, mainly focusing on death and religion ... and really got me thinking. More on that in a bit. I'm in the midst of making tomato sauce for pizzas tonight.
